Stowe Derby
The Stowe Derby began in 1945 as a downhill race from the summit of Mt. Mansfield to Stowe Village. The course finishes along the Stowe Recreation Path and combines steep descents with mixed terrain. The long course drops nearly 2,700 feet and covers about 20 km, while a short course covers the final section near the village.
The event offers multiple race divisions that use different skiing techniques and equipment. Two long course divisions follow the full route from the Toll Road to the village in classic and skate formats. A fixed heel division requires the heel to remain attached to the ski; telemark setups do not qualify for that division. Typical finishing times vary widely between competitive and recreational skiers.
The short course is a mass start near the Stowe Recreation Path parking area and follows the final leg of the long course. It is intended for children ages 6 and up and for participants who prefer a shorter route; the short course typically draws about 100 competitors.
Registration opens on December 7, 2026 and closes February 19, 2027 for most divisions. Typical registration fees listed are: 6 km $45, 20 km $90 for classic and skate, and 20 km fixed heel $75. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
