The Southwest Vertical Challenge at AZ Snowbowl takes place at Snowbowl Fort Valley Lodge in Flagstaff, Arizona. The course follows single-track sections of the AZT trail through Coconino National Forest, opens into aspen meadows, and finishes with an ascent up Upper Volcano to the gondola at a peak elevation of 11,500. The approximate route distance is 11 to 12 miles and the course includes about 4300 of elevation gain.
The 2026 edition was postponed and rescheduled for August 14, 2027; registered participants for the earlier date were offered either a full refund or the option to defer registration to the rescheduled event.
The event is USATF MUT sanctioned. Packet pickup is listed at AZ Snowbowl, 9300 N. Snowbowl Rd., Flagstaff, with pickup windows noted for August 13 and August 14. The posted registration fee for the Vertical Challenge is $110.11, with an early bird pricing period advertised from December 25 through August 15. A rooftop party at noon with live music, free beer, giveaways, and finisher medals are listed among event activities, and awards are noted as three-deep with no double dipping.
