Southwest Vertical Challenge at AZ Snowbowl

The Southwest Vertical Challenge at Arizona Snowbowl is an inaugural USATF MUT sanctioned mountain race held on high-altitude trails in Flagstaff. The course covers approximately 11 miles of continuous ascent, beginning near 7,000 ft and finishing above 11,500 ft, and is limited to 150 participants.

The marked trail includes hydration and nutrition stations at designated points and on-course safety support. The finish area is located at the summit and includes a post-race celebration zone. Podium awards are presented to top finishers with additional recognition for age group categories. Event registration includes an official race entry, a commemorative race T-shirt, a finisher’s medal, on-course action photos, and access to hydration and aid stations.

Time and progress requirements are enforced: runners must reach the Aspen Loop (approximately 7–8 miles) within 4.5 hours to continue and must complete the full course within 8 hours for official results. Packet pickup is available on the Thursday and Friday before the race at a select pre-race location in Flagstaff. Spectators are allowed in designated viewing areas.

Recommended equipment and preparations include trail running shoes, a hydration pack or handheld water, sunscreen, and layered clothing to address rapidly changing mountain weather. Volunteers support course operations and receive event swag and food. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
