Skunk Ape Trail Run - August 1, 2026
The Skunk Ape Trail Run is a trail race held at Monte Sano State Park in Huntsville, Alabama on August 1, 2026. It is the third race in the Wild Thangs Trail Series and offers two trail distances.
The course includes bluff views, mountain scenery, creek crossings, and waterfalls. Several aid stations are provided with water, Gatorade, Coke, pretzels, M&M's, granola bars and other items. The event is capped at 400 runners.
Race logistics note that the event is cupless; runners must carry a handheld bottle, pack, or reusable cup. A reusable RunningLane cup is available for purchase at checkout for $5. All participants in the Skunk Ape 5 Mile and 10 Mile races receive a short sleeve tri-blend t-shirt and a finisher award; the shirt is the same design across the series.
Packet pickup is available at RunningLane, 2407 Memorial Pkwy SW, Huntsville, with the main pickup for Skunk Ape on Friday, July 31, 2026 from 12:00 to 5:00 PM. Morning pickup on race day is also possible. Registration closes Wednesday, July 29 at 11:59 PM CT and the race is limited to 400 entries.
Organizers list age groups for awards and timing. They suggest participants be able to maintain about 15 minute miles and note a 17 minute per mile cutoff for Long Series participants. Average summer temperatures for Huntsville are lows around 65 to 75 F and highs around 85 to 95 F. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
