Sedbergh Hills Fell Race
The event is a long established fell race run from People's Hall, Howgill Lane, Sedbergh. The course covers 22.5 km / 14 miles with 1830 m / 6004 ft of ascent over the Howgill Fells. The terrain is mainly grassy fell with steep climbs and steep descents and sections of fast running.
The route leaves the village, passes Lockbank Farm and climbs onto open fell terrain with a sequence of checkpoints on hill summits and stream junctions. Major checkpoints include the summits of Arant Haw, Castley Knott, the stream junction near Black Force, a stream junction in Bowderdale, The Calf and Winder, with the finish returning to People's Hall. Cut off times are applied at intermediate checkpoints and at the finish and will be strictly enforced.
The race is categorised AL under fell running rules and is run under FRA regulations. Competitors must carry full mandatory kit; kit checks take place at registration and may be carried out at random at the finish. The use of GPS devices is forbidden. Navigation ability is essential because parts of the course are pathless and visibility can be poor. Water on route is limited.
Entry is limited to 450 runners and there is no entry on the day. Parking is provided only at Sedbergh School, Lupton Fields. A cash only refreshments service operates at race headquarters. Dogs are not permitted on the event field. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
