The Wansfell race is an out-and-back fell race listed as Category AS with a distance of 3.14 km / 2.1 m and a climb of 405 m (1329 ft). The route starts at the bottom of Stock Ghyll Lane behind the Salutation Hotel (GR 337044) and finishes slightly further up the road at the layby of Force Cafe, formerly the old Kelsick school.
The course begins with a steep tarmacked climb to a fell gate and stile, followed by a runnable section to a second gate. Competitors then climb a steep set of stone steps onto open fell, cross rough grass and continue to a rocky summit. The summit is the only checkpoint; runners must follow the flagged route to and away from the summit. Many runners descend to the right of the main path as they look down the fell, rejoining the main path near the bottom.
The road section at the beginning and end remains open to traffic and will be marshalled. Wet or misty conditions can make the descent slippery and navigation important. Full FRA kit is required and will be checked at registration; competitors without the required kit will not be allowed to race. Full FRA kit comprises waterproof whole body cover with taped seams and attached hood, hat, gloves, map of the route, compass, whistle and emergency food.
Prize giving will take place at Force Cafe. Entries are managed on SI Entries and have published opening and closing dates. Notices will be posted before the race if the organiser cancels due to dangerous conditions. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
