Savage Gulf Marathon
The Savage Gulf Marathon is a trail event in Savage Gulf State Park near Beersheba Springs and Coalmont, Tennessee. It is organized by HardWin Adventures with support from the Tennessee Park Rangers Association. The event offers multiple course options and raises proceeds to fund training scholarships for State Park Rangers.
Distances:
- Marathon
- 25K
- Ruck 25K
The full marathon covers a loop that descends into the gulf and climbs back out twice, traversing rocky trails, sandstone bluffs, waterfalls, stream crossings, and sections of old growth forest. Organizers warn the course is extremely hard; some participants call it one of the most difficult marathons in the U.S. Typical finishing times range from about 4.5 to 8 hours.
The 25K is a loop with a short out-and-back and returns via a different trail. The Ruck 25K follows the same route while carrying a weighted pack. Weight requirements for rucking are stated by bodyweight: over 150 lb carry 20 lb dry weight; under 150 lb carry 10 lb dry weight. Weigh-ins take place before the race and random checks may occur on course.
Safety measures include mandatory personal hydration and two hard cutoffs on the marathon course; runners who miss a cutoff are located and escorted to the finish. The event description emphasizes preparedness and respect for the terrain. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
