Rockys Backyard Ultra : Omanawa
Rockys Backyard Ultra III Edition is a looped endurance event at McLaren Falls, Tauranga. Each lap is 6.71 km with more than 140 metres of elevation gain per lap. Runners must complete the same loop each hour and return to basecamp before the next hour begins; missing the cutoff results in elimination. The race continues until only one runner remains.
The course runs through native New Zealand bush and passes waterfalls, lake edges, and sections where glowworms may be visible at night. The format uses a single repeated loop and a fixed hourly cutoff, making the event both physically and mentally demanding.
The event is self supported. Between loops, basecamp provides water, electrolytes, snacks, real food, and sponsor supported items for runners to use during the remaining time in each hour. Each registered entrant receives the Rockys III Edition neck gaiter designed for wet bush conditions and cold night hours.
The field size is capped and entries are limited. Pricing is tiered so earlier entries pay less. The event emphasizes the repeated same-loop format, the natural trail setting at McLaren Falls, and communal basecamp support rather than competitive placements for all but the final finisher.
