Rocky's Backyard Ultra
Rocky's Backyard Ultra is a mountain endurance event held at the YMCA of the Rockies - Estes Park Center in Colorado. The race follows a specific format where participants must complete a 4.167 mile loop every hour. The event has no set distance or time limit, continuing until only one runner remains.
The course is located at an elevation of approximately 8,000 feet, bordering Rocky Mountain National Park. Each loop includes roughly 500 feet of climbing and provides views of Longs Peak and Twin Sisters. Runners must line up at the start of every hour to begin the next loop; failure to start on time or finish within the hour results in disqualification.
Event Regulations and Logistics
The race operates under strict backyard ultra rules:
- No trekking poles or pacers are permitted.
- Personal aid is prohibited during the loops; assistance is only allowed at base camp between yards.
- Headphones are not allowed during daylight hours.
- The event is cupless, requiring runners to provide their own reusable bottles or cups.
Base camp serves as the primary aid station where participants manage their own nutrition and crew. While tent or van camping is not permitted on-site, lodging options are available at the YMCA and nearby partner hotels in Estes Park.
Awards and Recognition
Participants who reach the 100 mile mark earn a finisher's buckle. The final runner standing receives a prize of $1,000. Registration includes a custom hat and a finisher or DNF award.
