About the race

Rocky's Backyard Ultra is a mountain backyard ultra held on trails bordering Rocky Mountain National Park. The format uses repeated 4.167 mile loops run every hour on the hour; each loop (referred to as a "yard") includes roughly 500 feet of vertical gain and follows mountain singletrack at about 7,500 feet elevation. Longs Peak and the Twin Sisters are visible from the course. Runners who remain in the event may continue through the night.

The race awards $1,000 to the last runner standing and issues buckles to participants who reach 100 miles (24 yards). Additional awards include a custom fractel hat and finisher or DNF recognition. Support is provided from a base camp between loops; personal aid is not allowed during loops. Other rules include no trekking poles, no pacers, no headphones during daylight hours, and the requirement to start each loop on time and finish it before the next hour begins. The event is cupless; participants should bring a personal cup or may purchase a reusable cup at registration. Tent or van camping at base camp is not permitted. Packet pickup occurs the Friday before the race at the Estes Park Mountain Shop from 4:00 to 6:00 PM. Registration fees vary by period, with an early rate and a standard rate applied later in the registration window. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
