Rim Rock 50 Mile Trail Challenge
The Rim Rock 50 Mile Trail Challenge is a distance running event held at Skyline Wilderness Park in Napa, California. The course traverses rugged terrain through the park, the Napa Open Space Preserve, and the Suscol Headwaters Trail system. Participants experience varied landscapes including oak-covered ridgelines, shaded forests, and exposed trails with views of Napa Valley and the San Francisco Bay.
The event offers two primary distances:
- 50 mile solo: A course consisting of two and a half loops, totaling approximately 51 miles.
- Mini Rim Rock: A single loop challenge of approximately 25 miles.
The route involves significant elevation changes and includes technical single-track sections. Runners must maintain an average pace of 16.5 minutes per mile to meet the 14-hour final cutoff. There are specific intermediate cutoffs: runners must complete the first loop in under 6 hours and begin the final 6-mile loop by 12 hours.
As a cupless event, participants are required to carry their own reusable hydration systems. Four aid stations provide water, electrolytes, gels, and various food items such as fruit and salty snacks. Crew access is permitted at the start/finish area and the Lake Marie aid station. Pacers are allowed only for solo 50 mile runners after the first loop is completed. Running poles and headphones are permitted, though speakers are prohibited to avoid disturbing other park visitors.
