Event Overview

The Night Challenge 4: Glendalough is a night running event held in County Wicklow. Participants navigate technical terrain under darkness, with the routes featuring moderate terrain and significant elevation changes. The event offers two distinct distances, both utilizing portions of the Wicklow Way and St Kevin's Way trails.

Course Options

Participants can choose between two course lengths:

  • 10 km: Includes a climb of 490 m to the summit of Derrybawn Mountain and a loop around Glendalough.
  • 5 km: A shorter loop around the lower lake that passes the Glendalough round tower and St Kevin's church.

The long course is open to runners aged 18 and older, while the short course is open to those aged 14 and older. Both routes are fully marked, and the use of GPS devices for navigation is not permitted.

Equipment Requirements

All participants must carry specific mandatory kit items. The standard requirements include a waterproof jacket, hat or buff, gloves, a whistle, a charged mobile phone with an emergency number, and a foil blanket or bivvy bag. Additionally, because this is a night event, every runner must have a torch suitable for running, with a head torch being the preferred option. A backup light source or spare batteries are also recommended.

Logistics

The event is based at the Glendalough Upper Lake Carpark. There is a vehicle entry fee for the parking area, and carpooling is encouraged. Registration and prizegiving take place on-site at the car park. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
