About the race
The New River Trail Races are a multi-distance trail running weekend in April 2027 at New River Trail State Park in Fries, Virginia, hosted by SWVA Running. The event offers a range of distances on a rail-trail course that is 100% dirt and crushed gravel, flat, fast, and with no mountain scrambles.
Distances include:
- 100 mile
- 100K
- 50K
- 25K
- 10K
- 5K (free untimed community run; no swag or finisher's medal)
Aid station support and volunteer assistance are provided on course. All finishers of the 10K, 25K, and 50K receive a finisher's medal; 100K and 100 mile finishers receive a buckle. Awards are given for first through third overall in male, female, and nonbinary categories.
The event is cup-less; all runners must carry a reusable or collapsible cup. Gear requirements for the 100 mile and 100K include a headlamp or light, water filter, emergency blanket, and a reusable/collapsible cup. 50K runners are advised to consider bringing a headlamp or flashlight.
The start line is at 321 Firehouse Road, Fries, VA. Parking is across a grassy field with limited lighting; Virginia State Parks charges a $7 per day parking fee unless a monthly or annual pass is held. Portions of the trail have limited cell phone service; hand radio operators will assist with communications. The trail remains open to the public during the event, so runners should be courteous to cyclists, e-bikes, and horseback riders and take care at road crossings where traffic has the right of way.
