Tour De Helvellyn
Tour De Helvellyn takes place on Saturday 19 December 2026. Established more than ten years ago, the event is a winter ultra of around 38 miles that circles Helvellyn, primarily on mountain trails, bridleways and minor lanes. The route starts and finishes at Askham Community Centre, CA10 2PG, and reaches heights of nearly 600 m on multiple occasions.
The route is unmarked and requires navigation. Support on course is minimal and the event emphasises winter mountain skills, experience and self reliance. Entries are strictly limited to experienced and competent entrants, with NAV4 limiting starters to about 200 and allowing an entry list of 220 to account for non-starters. A waiting list activates once 220 places are taken. Individual support teams, pacing or crew are not permitted and spectators are not allowed at control points.
A formal kit check takes place before the start and correct equipment is mandatory. Required items include waterproof jacket and overtrousers, long sleeve thermal layers and a fleece, an insulated hooded jacket for emergencies, warm hat and gloves, long thermal leg wear, a headtorch, sufficient food and drink, a mug or drinks bottle, compass and whistle, a survival bag and emergency food, a basic first aid kit including a 5x5 cm wound dressing and tape, and a paper map suitable for navigation. GPS devices are not acceptable as a map.
Parking for cars and campers is typically available at the community centre and adjacent overflow field. Entrants receive a final information email in the week before the event with weather dependent updates and logistical details. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
