Mukamuka Munter
The Mukamuka Munter is a Wellington area wilderness trail race established in 2007 and categorised as a "wilderness run" inspired by the Wellington Trampers' Marathon. The fixture for 15 August 2026 covers approximately 32 km with about 965 m of total ascent.
The course begins at the Orongorongo River mouth and follows the Wild Coast Trail around Turakirae Head, then heads east toward the Mukamuka-iti and Mukamuka Stream. Early sections include hard packed 4x4 trail that becomes sandy shoreline and is suitable for faster running.
The route then enters a broad river valley that becomes more rugged toward the South Saddle. Technical river running and navigation are important in this section. After the saddle, the course descends on steep, rooted tracks to Matthews Stream and includes a major crossing of the Orongorongo River.
Within Remutaka Forest Park the course passes through native bush and reaches viewpoints at the South Saddle where wind can be strong. The final part runs along the big bend track and the Orongorongo River track toward Catchpool and the finish. The event is the inaugural race fixture of the Wilderness Running and Endurance Collective Inc. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
