Mineshaft 10k
Mineshaft 10k is a trail race scheduled for March 13, 2027, organized by Mountain Junkies L.L.C. Registration opens in November and the event will be capped at 100 participants due to parking constraints.
Entry fees for the 10k follow a staged schedule: $35 until December 31st, $40 from January 1st to March 10th, $45 from March 11th to April 2nd at 6pm, and $50 from April 2nd at 6pm through race day; a virtual option is available for $25. The virtual entry counts as an RNUTS qualifying race; virtual registrants receive a race shirt if registered by 3/11/26, otherwise registrants receive a Mountain Junkies LLC Hoo Rag.
The course uses part of the Hellgate 100k route (miles 47-52 in reverse) along the Glenwood Horse Trail between Bobletts Gap Road and the Bearwallow Trailhead. Runners climb about 1 mile on a dirt road, then a steep 0.3 mile ascent onto the Glenwood Horse Trail, followed by approximately 5 miles on the trail. The route is up and down until the final 1.5 miles, which are mostly downhill. Rock gardens appear near the 5 mile mark. In inclement weather the race may be run as an out and back.
All runners must use the provided shuttle buses to reach the start; there is no parking or spectators at the start. Packet pickup is scheduled on 3/11/27 at Gilbert Chiropractic in Salem, 3/12/27 at Fleet Feet Sports in Roanoke, and on 3/13/27 at the Bearwallow Day Use Area.
Awards include unique prizes for the top three overall men and women and first place masters, plus medals for the top three in 13 male and 13 female age groups. Race rules specify that dogs are not permitted, race numbers must be worn on the front and visible, shortcuts are prohibited, amplified speakers are not allowed on course or in start and finish areas, and runners should notify staff if they drop out.
