Lowther Lakeland Fell And Trail Race
The Lowther Lakeland Fell And Trail Race is scheduled for 15 August 2027 and is centred on Lowther Castle near Askham, three miles south of Penrith. The route is fully marked and runs across Askham Fell and the Lowther Valley.
The course is about 13 miles long with roughly 1400 ft of ascent. Surfaces include around three miles of tarmac, mostly open country on grassy tracks, and about two miles of rough pasture. Runners ford the River Lowther during the route. The course passes Heughscar Hill, the Cockpit, Heltondale, Butterwick, Knipe Scar and the grassland of Lowther Park before returning to Lowther Castle.
Contactless SPORTident timing is used and competitors carry SIAC wrist units to record intermediate times and the finish. The minimum age for entry is 18. Entries open 6 November 2026 and close at 22:00 on 14 August 2027; there is no entry on the day. The stated entry fee for this year is £6, reduced from the usual £16, and organisers invite a donation of £10; all proceeds after essential expenses will be donated to Eden Valley Hospice. Last year the event raised £3,500 for the charity.
Organised by volunteers, the event notes that trail shoes are generally more suitable than fell shoes and that runners must carry a lightweight raintop and full leg cover if conditions are wet or windy. Competitors may run with dogs in canicross style provided the dog is on a lead and does not impede others, and care is taken where livestock are present.
