Great Glen Ultra Marathon
The Great Glen Ultra Marathon takes place on 3rd July 2027 and covers 72 miles with approximately 8,500 ft of ascent. The event awards 4 UTMB points and has an entry fee listed as £123/125. The route runs from the Fort William area to Inverness along the waymarked Great Glen Way and is designed for solo, unsupported runners with marshaled checkpoints approximately every 10 miles.
The course uses a mixture of canal towpaths, forestry paths and tracks, with some short sections on quiet roads. Runners follow distinctive blue Great Glen Way posts and the optional High Route section, which includes extended views over Loch Ness. The first c. 30 miles are generally undulating and the major climbs come after Fort Augustus.
Checkpoints are located at Clunes (10.5 miles, cut off 2 hours 45 minutes), Laggan Locks (20 miles, 4 hours 30 minutes), Fort Augustus (31 miles, 7 hours 30 minutes), Invermoriston (40 miles, 10 hours), Drumnadrochit (54.5 miles, 14 hours 30 minutes), Loch Laide (62 miles, 18 hours) and the finish in Inverness (72 miles, 22 hours). Cut-off times are enforced for safety and marshals will use race-day judgement when necessary.
Runners must carry mandatory kit, which includes an uncut foil blanket, a working mobile phone with race control number saved, and a means to carry at least 1 litre of water; spot-checks will be made. The event is self-sufficient by design; support crews may meet runners only at Fort Augustus, Invermoriston, Drumnadrochit and the finish. Entry requires prior endurance experience such as previous ultra distances or comparable events. A refund policy and results archives for past years are published by the organiser.
