Great Glen Ultra Marathon
The Great Glen Ultra is a 72 mile ultramarathon along the Great Glen Way from Corpach near Fort William to Inverness. The course records about 8,500 ft of ascent and carries UTMB points 4. The event is designed to be run unsupported and is self sufficient, with marshaled checkpoints approximately every 10 miles and a fully marked route.
Terrain includes canal towpaths, forestry paths and tracks, and some sections on quiet roads. The route follows the waymarked Great Glen blue posts and uses the High Route option for parts of the course. There is an additional water stop at Grotaig around 49 miles.
A series of cut off times is set for safety; checkpoints include Clunes at 10.5 miles, Laggan Locks at 20 miles, Fort Augustus at 31 miles, Invermoriston at 40 miles, Drumnadrochit at 54.5 miles, Loch Laide at 62 miles and the finish at Inverness Athletics Stadium at 72 miles. Runners must obey marshal and medical team instructions and remove earphones at road crossings.
Mandatory kit must be carried and will be spot checked. Examples include a full foil blanket, a working mobile phone with race control number stored, a small first aid kit and a means to carry at least 1 litre of water. Support crews are permitted only at Fort Augustus, Invermoriston, Drumnadrochit and the finish.
