Grassroots Backyard Ultra : Okotoks, AB

GrassRoots Backyard Ultra takes place in Okotoks, about 20 minutes south of Calgary, on a 6.71 km loop that follows the Sheep River pathway, includes some single-track, and has 34 metres of elevation gain per loop.

The event uses the Last Runner Standing format. Each runner must complete the 6.71 km loop within one hour. Race rules note warning whistles at 3, 2, and 1 minute before each lap, the requirement to start moving at the bell, the need to be in the starting corral before the next lap begins, prohibition of receiving aid while on course, and that the final remaining runner must complete one additional lap to be declared the winner. Minimum age is 16 years on race day.

Timed events run on the same loop with limited entry:

  • BACKYARD15 (BY15): 15 hours, 100.65 km
  • BACKYARD24 (BY24): 24 hours, 100 miles

In 2026, 92 runners started and 42 completed at least 15 hours. The course record is 35 loops set in 2024.

Registration opens August 4, 2026. There are no refunds after registration. Transfers are allowed until 11:59 p.m. on June 1, 2027 with an administration fee. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
