Grassroots Backyard Ultra
Grassroots Backyard Ultra is a Last Runner Standing event held in Okotoks, Alberta, on a 6.71 km loop that follows the Sheep River pathway and includes a short section of single-track trail. Each loop has about 34 metres of elevation gain. Runners must complete one loop each hour to remain in the race; failure to finish a loop within the allotted hour results in a DNF. The final remaining runner must complete one additional loop to be declared the winner.
Timed events run on the same course and follow the same Backyard rules, with the finish determined by the clock. Distances offered include:
- BACKYARD15 (BY15) : 15 hours, about 100.65 km
- BACKYARD24 (BY24) : 24 hours, about 100 miles
Age limit for participation is 16 years or older on race day. Registration opens August 4, 2026, and closes when capacity is reached or on March 31, 2027. Entry capacity for the timed events is limited. There are no refunds; registrations may be transferred until June 1, 2027 for an administration fee. Race rules specify scheduled warning whistles before each lap, prohibition on receiving aid while on course once the bell has sounded, and requirement to be in the starting corral at each hour.
