Glen Lyon Ultra Marathon
Glen Lyon Ultra Marathon is a 31 miles foot race in remote Glen Lyon and Glen Lochay in Perthshire. The route gains about 3,500 ft of ascent and carries 2 UTMB points. The entry fee is shown as £73/75 and the event includes a race memento, goody bag and a technical race shirt or vest for collection on race day.
The course begins with a loop of Loch Lyon that includes around six river crossings where feet will get wet. After returning past the start area to collect drop bags, the route climbs into Glen Lochay to follow a high and a low level section before returning over the hill to finish in Glen Lyon. The course surface is approximately 85 percent off road with a middle section of tarmac. When off road, careful foot placement is advised as trips and slips have required first aid in the past. If early water crossings are in spate from heavy rain, a Route B will be used.
Aid provision includes a water station at about 8 miles, a halfway drop bag point at 15.5 miles, additional water stations at about 20 and 26 miles, and the finish at about 31 miles. Runners must carry mandatory kit that will be confirmed before the race; required items include a foil blanket, water container, food, a working mobile phone, a small first aid kit and a race vest. Recommended kit lists waterproofs, warm layers, hat, gloves, sunglasses and a folding cup. Camping at Loch Lyon Dam the night before is possible with social distancing and no open fires.
