About the race

Glen Lyon Ultra Marathon is a 31 mile mountain foot race in the Perthshire hills around Loch Lyon and Glen Lochay. The route covers about 85% off road, includes roughly 3,500 ft of ascent and awards 2 UTMB points. The entry fee is listed from £63 to £65.

The course begins with a loop of Loch Lyon that includes around six river crossings in the first eight miles, after which runners collect a drop bag. The route then climbs into Glen Lochay to complete a high and a low level section before returning over the hill to finish in Glen Lyon. There is a short middle section on tarmac. If river crossings are in spate after heavy rain, an alternate Route B will be used. Organisers advise caution when off road because trip, slip and fall incidents have occurred.

Water stations and checkpoints are located at about 8 miles, 15.5 miles (halfway drop bags), 20 miles, 26 miles and at the finish at roughly 31 miles. Runners are required to carry mandatory kit that will be confirmed before the race; examples given include a foil blanket, water container, food, a working mobile phone with race control number entered, a small first aid kit and a race vest. Recommended items include waterproofs, warm layers and a change of clothes for the finish.

Event rules note no transfer of places, no entry on the day, no muling, no walking poles, no dogs and no spectators. Loch Lyon Dam allows camping the night before with social distancing and no open fires. Travel to the start involves single track roads; parking is directed at the front of the dam and estate access must be respected. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
