High-Altitude Endurance in Estes Park
The Estes Epic is a multi-discipline mountain sports event held at an elevation of approximately 7,500 feet in Stanley Park, Colorado. The event takes place over two days, offering participants the opportunity to explore technical singletrack and mountain trails in the Estes Valley. The available distances and formats include:
- MTB 50K: A 31-mile mountain bike race on technical singletrack.
- Trail 50K: A full ultramarathon run on mountain trails.
- Heavy Half: A trail running race covering a half marathon distance.
- Epic Double: A combination event consisting of the MTB 50K on the first day and the Trail 50K on the second day, totaling 100 km.
The courses are set in a mountain environment and provide views of the surrounding Colorado terrain. All races operate as cupless events, requiring participants to bring their own bottles or reusable cups. Aid stations are positioned along the routes, providing water, Tailwind, and packaged snacks. For the 50 km distances, stations are located at miles 5.6, 8, 16, 21.5, and 25.5, while the Heavy Half features stations at miles 5.6 and 9.7.
Participants receive an event T-shirt, a hat, and wool finisher's socks. Those who complete the Epic Double also receive a custom hoodie. Awards are presented to the top male and female finishers in each race. The event serves as a fundraiser for the local high school mountain bike team, which competes in the Colorado High School Cycling League.
