Cwm Nant-y-Groes

Cwm Nant-y-Groes is a fell race held on 30 January 2027 near Sixbells, Abertillery (overflow car park of Bluebirds football ground, NP13 2PR). The course covers 9 km (5.6 mi) with about 550 m (1,804 ft) of ascent. The event is part of the South Wales Winter Hill Series and has a minimum age of over 16. Recorded course times include a male record of 48:29 (2022) and a female record of 54:47 (2023).

The route begins with a mandatory section to a stile onto open mountain; after the stile runners may take any route to visit checkpoints in order: cp1, cp2, cp3. From cp3 there is a mandatory anticlockwise loop flagged with small red flags, which should remain on the runner’s right; midway on that loop runners visit cp4 at the tree line and then return to cp3. After returning to cp3 the course requires visiting cp2 (the Brook), cp1 (the trig) and back down to the stile before following the mandatory path to the finish.

Navigational skills are required and local knowledge is beneficial. Full kit is mandatory and will be enforced on the day; no kit, no run. Entry fees are listed as £5 for WFRA members, £7 for non WFRA, and £10 on the day. Organisers ask for car sharing to limit traffic. The event is insured by WFRA. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
