Boo the Stigma 5K : Shelby Middle School
Boo the Stigma is a community 5K held at Shelby Middle School on the cross country trail and track in Shelby, NC. The event focuses on raising awareness of mental health and reducing stigma, especially for school-aged children. Mental health providers from the community will host informational booths to share available resources and demonstrate how support can be accessible.
The event includes t-shirts and medals for all participants. Additional activities listed by the organizer include trick or treating, food trucks, goody bags, a 50/50 raffle, and a costume contest with a prize. A mobile food vendor will be on site. Packet pick up is available the day of the event. Parking is at the football field and the race begins on the track.
Proceeds go to Alexander Youth Network. The organizer states funds will support the network’s day treatment program for students in kindergarten through grade 12. That program is described as offering highly individualized treatment, a structured classroom environment, multi-sensory techniques, and smaller class sizes to help students succeed and return to traditional school programs.
The route is described as a difficult trail; strollers are not allowed on the trail. Participants who prefer not to use the trail may walk the track. Age divisions are provided, ranging from 10 and under to 61 and older. The registration fee is $40 and the last day to register to receive a t-shirt is October 17.
