Boo the Stigma 5K
Scheduled for October 31, 2026, at Shelby Middle School, Shelby, North Carolina, this event is a 5K held on the school's cross country trail. The event aims to raise awareness about mental health in the local community, with particular attention to school aged children.
The event will feature booths staffed by mental health providers to share information about available resources and the accessibility of mental health support. All participants will receive t shirts and medals. Additional activities include trick or treating, food trucks, goody bags, a 50/50 raffle, a costume contest with a prize, and other community-oriented offerings. The Black Sheep Mobile Grill is listed as a food vendor.
Proceeds will benefit Alexander Youth Network. Their day treatment program provides highly individualized treatment programs for students K-12 who face classroom challenges due to mental or behavioral health diagnoses. The program uses a structured classroom environment, multi-sensory techniques, and smaller class sizes to help students develop skills and return to a traditional school program.
The event is open to all ages as a 5K walk or race. Registration has a fee of $40 and runs from August 28, 2026 through October 30, 2026. Time divisions for participants are listed as 10 and under; 10-15; 16-20; 21-30; 31-40; 41-50; 51-60; and 61 plus. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
