Blue Lake 24hr Challenge
The Blue Lake 24hr Challenge is a self supported, 24 hour running event held around the Blue Lake in Rotorua. The route is a clockwise loop of roughly 6 km per lap. Participants may run as many or as few laps as they wish.
The course is described as flat with about 100 m of elevation gain per lap. Use of poles is not permitted. The event requires runners to bring everything they need for the full 24 hour period.
Organisers state the event aims to provide a free event in a safe environment and to promote trail running and ultramarathon participation across ages. The event is run clockwise only. For 2025, there is no mountain bike component.
The format emphasises self-sufficiency and individual pacing, with a focus on completing laps around the lake. Practical considerations include carrying or arranging one’s own food, hydration, lighting, and overnight gear, since the event is self supported.
