Barefoot XTrail Series - McKerrow’s Revenge
McKerrow’s Revenge is a trail event in Wainuiomata that uses high-quality tracks across bush, river valley and open areas. Runners start at the Wainui Athletics Club grounds and follow routes that include Reservoir Rd, a footbridge crossing, and a mix of named tracks and loops including Whakanui Track, McKerrow’s Track, Gums Loop, Tana Umaga Track, Forest Loop and Sledge Track. The long and medium routes include a climb to native bush and sections described as technical running.
Course notes warn that parts of a clockwise 3.5 km loop on McKerrow’s Track are not obvious; exploring that loop before event day is not recommended unless the person is an experienced tramper and carries a map, GPS and cell phone. All three courses finish back near Richard Prouse Park after following the final approach along the Wainuiomata River.
Distances and typical completion ranges listed on the event page:
- 16 km : long course, about 1:30 to 2:45 hours
- 12 km : medium course, about 1:10 to 1:45 hours
- 6 km : short course, about 35 to 50 minutes
The event is part of the Barefoot XTRAIL Series and takes place on local tracks around Wainuiomata. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
