About the race

The Arataki Trail Run is a volunteer-marshaled trail event based at the Arataki Visitor Centre in the Waitakere Ranges. The route is a clockwise circuit using the Beveridge Trail, Exhibition Drive, Pipeline Road and Slip Track, with two new out-and-back sections off Pipeline Road that make a single lap 8.5 km. Participants may choose:

  • 8.5 km (one lap)
  • 17 km (two laps)

The course passes through forest tracks, dappled glades and 4WD terrain, and offers views that include glimpses of the Nihotopu Dam. The total ascent for one lap is reported as 307 m, with a sustained climb of about 175 m over roughly 1.5 km from Pipeline Road up to the top of Slip Track. Tracks are described as well formed and not highly technical, with marshals and water/electrolyte stations at regular intervals. On-the-day entries are subject to a field limit and incur an additional $5 fee for late payment. Parking at the Arataki car park is limited to the first 40 cars, with overflow directed to a ranger depot; carpooling is suggested. Kauri protection measures apply on site, with cleaning mats and brushes provided to protect kauri from dieback. A free post-race pancake breakfast is provided at the Arataki Centre. The event is organized by volunteers from the Sri Chinmoy Marathon Team. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
