20 Barriers Race
The event is a five mile countryside race that uses field paths, trails and the canal towpath to the south of Carnforth. The race starts and finishes at Carnforth High School, Kellet Road, Carnforth LA5 9LS. The course crosses a number of stiles and field boundaries, which give the race its name; organisers state that none of these barriers should present unusual hazards.
Entry is on the night only and costs £10; there is no pre-entry option. The event is held under FRA rules and competitors must be 16 or over on the day of the race. Organisers reverted the course in 2022 to its traditional return route through the old Lundsfield quarry area; the line follows yellow marker posts to the Kellet Road canal bridge and crosses a pale green footbridge down to the towpath. Trail or studded running shoes are advised.
Changes to the start and finish locations due to new perimeter fencing at the school are now permanent; maps and a pre-race briefing provide course details. Prizes include goody bags for the first three men and the first three women plus other spot prizes at the finish. To reduce plastic use, some water and juice will be available at the finish; participants are advised to bring a reusable drinking cup.
