WinterRock : Independence, Kansas

WinterRock is a trail running event held at Elk City Lake near Independence, Kansas, organized by the FlatRock Race Series. The event is part of the FlatRock Triple Crown series and includes multiple distances.

• 25K technical trail out-and-back on the Elk River Hiking Trail
• 12K out-and-back on mostly single-track trail
• Triple Crown option combining three FlatRock races into a 176K series

The course is mostly single-track and technical, winding through forest with limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. The start and packet pickup are at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam.

Aid on course is limited and largely unmanned. The 25K has three aid stations and the 12K has one turnaround aid; stations are approximately 3.5 to 4 miles apart and provide water only. No cups are provided, so participants must carry their own handheld bottle and are responsible for carrying any fuel or calories they need.

Shirts and medallions are provided for the event. Post-race food such as Frito Chili Pie will be available. Trekking poles are allowed and dogs are permitted when leashed.

The event uses a race-credit only policy rather than refunds, with a sliding scale for credits. Volunteer shifts and a military discount are available. Race rules include no littering, no stashing supplies, and adherence to race management decisions; failures may result in disqualification.
