Independence, United States • 3 Jan 2026
Event overview
WinterRock is a trail running event in Independence, Kansas, held at Elk City Lake Outlet Channel Shelter on January 3, 2026. The event offers the following distances:
- Triple Crown (entry option for all three FlatRock races)
- 25K
- 12K
The Triple Crown entry covers WinterRock 25K, FlatRock 101K, and FlatRock 50K, a combined distance of 176K with a special award for those who finish all three races. Shirts and medallions will be provided. Post-race food, including Frito Chili Pie, will be available.
Course and aid
The course is a technical, mostly single-track out-and-back on the Elk River Hiking Trail. The route runs through forest and features limestone bluffs, rock formations, and vistas. The 25K has three aid stations; the 12K has one turnaround aid station. Aid stations are unmanned, spaced about 3.5-4 miles apart, and provide only water. No cups will be provided, so runners must carry a handheld bottle and their own fuel.
Logistics, rules and policies
Packet pickup and the start/finish area are at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam. Trekking poles are allowed. Dogs are permitted but must be on a leash. Volunteer shifts earn benefits - one shift yields a 25% discount on future race registration and four shifts equal a free race credit. Deferral/transfer credit is offered on a sliding scale: 100% credit at 90+ days, 75% at 30-89 days, and no credit within 30 days. Runners are responsible for their own safety; local EMS will be used for medical emergencies. Race rules cover littering, course order, dropdowns before race day, and grounds for disqualification.
