FlatRock 101 is a multi-distance trail event held at Elk City Lake near Independence, Kansas. The event offers the following distances:
- 101K
- 50K
- 25K
- 12K
- 5K
The course is a double out and back on the Elk River Hiking Trail. The route is an accurately measured forest trail that winds through limestone bluffs, rock formations, and scenic vistas. The trail is mostly single track, very rocky, and does not include long hills.
Aid station coverage varies by distance. The 101K has 15 aid stations, 11 of which are fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and snack foods including soup and sandwiches, plus four water only stations. The 50K has seven aid stations with similar provisioning at most stations. The 25K has three aid stations, the 12K has one fully stocked aid station, and the 5K has no aid stations. Distances between aid stations are approximately 3.5 to 5 miles.
Packet pickup is available in two opportunities including a Friday evening packet pickup with a spaghetti dinner offering vegetarian and gluten free options, and a Saturday morning pickup at the Outlet Channel Group Shelter, the race headquarters located on the north side of the Elk City Lake dam.
Drop bags and crew access are allowed only for the 50K and 101K at OakRidge, the Turnaround, and the Start/Finish. Pacers may join 101K runners only after the runner has completed the first 50K; one pacer at a time must sign a waiver. Complimentary race photos will be provided by Mile 90 Photography.
The event policy states no refunds; a sliding credit scale applies for transfers to future FlatRock events. Campsites with and without electricity and showers are available near the start and motels are located in Independence. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
