Event Overview
The FlatRock 50K is part of a series of trail runs held on the Elk River Hiking Trail near Independence, Kansas. It is described as the first and oldest trail ultra marathon in Kansas.
Course Details
The course is a technical, primarily single-track trail that follows an out-and-back route. It winds through forested areas featuring limestone bluffs and rock formations. The event is accurately measured.
Distances and Schedule
The event offers four race distances:
- 50K
- 25K
- 12K
- 5K
Packet pickup is available the day before the race and on race morning. A pre-race spaghetti dinner, with vegetarian and gluten-free options, is offered during Friday evening packet pickup.
Aid and Support
Aid station support varies by distance. The 50K features seven aid stations, five of which are fully stocked with water, electrolyte drink, and snack-type foods, including soup and sandwiches; the other two provide water only. The 25K has three aid stations, with two fully stocked. The 12K has one fully stocked aid station. The 5K has no aid stations.
Drop bags are allowed only for the 50K distance and are transported to designated aid stations. Crew access is permitted for the 50K at specified aid stations.
Logistics
The race headquarters and start/finish area is the Outlet Channel Group Shelter, located north of the Elk City Lake dam. Nearby camping with showers is available, and motels are located approximately 7 miles away in Independence.
