The Ward Mountain Scramble Trail Run takes place at the Ward Mountain Forest Service Campground near Ely, Nevada. The event features multiple single track courses starting and finishing at the shared parking area for Group Site A. The terrain consists of mixed trails, dirt roads, and mountain paths with varying elevation profiles.
Participants can choose from five distinct distances:
- Marathon: A two-lap course where the first lap is run counter-clockwise and the second lap is run in the opposite direction.
- 13.3 miles: A route with approximately 1,850 feet of elevation gain featuring numerous switchbacks and a climb back to the top of the mountain.
- 8.5 miles: A course with about 1,250 feet of elevation gain that utilizes the G-loop, Rope Tow, and Making Pancakes trails.
- 5.5 miles: A loop with approximately 727 feet of elevation gain that passes through open meadows and rolling sections.
- 2 miles: A route following the G-loop and H-loop trails with a gentle uphill start and an elevation gain of 270 feet.
The trails are marked with flagging and arrow signs at forks and turns. Aid stations are distributed based on distance, with the longest routes featuring up to three stations, including one self-serve station. The event is chip-timed, and all participants receive a finisher medal and an event shirt. Dogs are permitted to participate for an additional fee provided they remain on a leash at all times.
