Vol State
The Vol State is a long-distance self-supported footrace covering 314 miles. The route begins with a ferry crossing of the Mississippi River from Missouri into Kentucky and finishes at the Rock atop Sand Mountain in Northeast Georgia. The course runs across Tennessee in July, following highways and backroads, over hills, across rivers, and up and down long valleys.
Entrants are expected to provide for their own food, water, rest, and navigation; there are no staffed aid stations or pacers provided. All entrants must report their location by phone or text twice daily at 0730 and 1930; failure to check in will prompt a search response. Runners may leave the race at any time by calling in to request transportation to the car park; transport will be arranged as soon as feasible.
Two registration options are offered. The lower cost option is for those who provide their own transportation to the start and their own pre-race accommodations. The higher cost option includes a parking spot at the finish from the day before until the entrant finishes or the race ends, a guaranteed bus seat to Union City with lunch, a double occupancy room in Union City the night before the race, and a bus ride from Union City to the ferry on race morning.
A wait list will be maintained and initial entrants were to be chosen late summer 2024. Refunds are available on a declining scale: 90% until December 24, then 80% January through March, 70% April and May, and 50% in June. Withdrawals replaced from the wait list receive refunds by mailed paper check. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
