Underdown Trail Races
The Underdown Trail Races take place at the Underdown Trail system near Merrill, WI, about 6 miles off Highway 51. The event combines backcountry trail running and mountain bike races on primarily singletrack that passes isolated lakes and includes dozens of boardwalks. The course is described as well marked and runs through remote areas formed by ancient glacial activity.
The running program offers multiple distances and the mountain bike event continues as part of an endurance series. Entries are limited to preserve an intimate trail experience. The organizer provides stocked aid stations, drop bag transport, divisional awards, and race photo digital downloads. Finishers receive a custom commemorative Underdown mug. Proceeds from the event are used to build and maintain trails at the Underdown.
Warnings note that terrain and remoteness can make the event demanding. Cell phone service may be spotty and participants are advised to consider their fitness and experience in wooded, remote settings before entering.
