"Train"ing Run
The "Train"ing Run is a non competitive annual event held on National Trails Day, the first Saturday of June, along the Delaware and Raritan Canal Towpath. The event uses the canal towpath that the club runs on regularly and brings together runners and walkers at multiple points along the trail.
A group of runners begins in Trenton and follows the towpath back to Johnson Park in Piscataway for a full distance of 34.6 miles. Along the way, nearly 200 additional participants join at various access points. Bus service is provided from Johnson Park to points on the towpath so participants can choose their start location and distance. Participants who cannot reach an intermediate point such as Rocky Hill are transported back to Johnson Park.
RVRR records miles run and makes a per mile donation to the Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey for every mile completed by participants. The club also operates a Frequent "Train"ing Program that awards commemorative mugs at 100, 200, and 300 mile milestones, and provides a special memento for those who complete the full 34.6 mile route.
Post run activities include a picnic with hot and cold food and drinks. The event is described as a celebration of the towpath and National Trails Day, with an emphasis on participation, camaraderie, and trail stewardship.
