Toxic Trail 37 : Canal Point to Stuart Beach
This is a point to point road race held in Canal Point, Florida, that follows a route from Port Mayaca to Stuart Beach of approximately 37 miles. The finish is on the beach with Atlantic Ocean views and a double bridge approach; a group ocean photo at the finish is traditionally encouraged.
The event aims to raise awareness about water discharge from Lake Okeechobee into the St. Lucie River via the C-44 canal, and the environmental effects of nutrient and chemical runoff on Palm City, Stuart, and surrounding areas. Organizers describe a vision of people along the road with signs and banners to support the cause.
Course notes describe varied surroundings: the first 20 miles run against traffic in rural, quieter areas; miles 23 to 33 pass through busier Stuart roadways and require following traffic laws; the final 3 to 4 miles reach the coast. The race takes place in June in South Florida and participants should expect high heat and humidity, including heat index values above 100 degrees.
Support and safety: aid stations are planned roughly every 5 to 7 miles. Solo runners are strongly encouraged to use a crew; uncrewed runners will be asked about qualifications and may use an available shuttle to the start. Relay teams may change runners at intervals of two miles or more. Crew vehicles must pull fully off the road and display hazards while parked. A police presence will be on the highway and participants must exercise caution when crossing roadways. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
