The Ridgeway Challenge
The Ridgeway Challenge is an 86-mile (139 km) point-to-point trail running race that follows the entire length of The Ridgeway National Trail. The route runs from Ivinghoe Beacon in Hertfordshire to the Avebury Stones in Wiltshire and gains about 6060 ft (approximately 1850 m) of elevation. The race has a 28 hour time limit and a maximum field of 250 runners. Runners must be at least 20 years old.
The route uses permanent Ridgeway signage with additional race markers where navigation is less clear; competitors must carry the route on a watch, phone or paper map. Open GPS tracking and chip timing with live results are provided. The event is held under TRA licence 7125 and UKA rules and is a UTMB World Series index race.
There are eight checkpoints along the course, for example CP1 Wendover at 10.1 miles, CP5 South Stoke at 41.7 miles and CP8 Ogbourne St George at 76.4 miles. Checkpoints supply water, soft drinks, Precision Fuel & Hydration products, snacks, pre-made sandwiches and fresh fruit. Hot food is available at CP5 and CP8 and hot water is available at several later checkpoints. Runners may leave a drop bag at the start to be transported to CP5 and the finish.
Required kit includes a charged mobile phone, GPX or paper route access, at least 1 litre of water capacity, a foil blanket or survival bag, primary and backup lights, a waterproof jacket with hood, warm clothing, basic first aid and a re-usable cup. Entry fees start at £172 with a reduced affiliated rate. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
