The Last Cowboy Backyard is an official Backyard Ultra held at the community center in O'Neill, Nebraska, at 501 S 4th St. The event uses the Cowboy Trail as a flat out-and-back course that is described as nontechnical and conducive to high mileage.
The format follows Backyard Ultra rules: each lap is 4.17 miles and a new lap starts every hour until only one runner remains. Laps start and end at the community center; runners must be in the start corral at the beginning of a lap to continue. A gong will be used to signal the start of each lap. Runners receive credit for the mileage they accumulate and will be awarded custom wooden plaques on site with their mileage burned into the award.
Crew and aid are permitted only between laps in designated areas. Each runner may have up to three crew members. Two crew areas will be available: an outdoor area by the start/finish arch and indoor space inside the community center. Organizers will provide water and Proxima C Endurance Fuel; other supplies are the responsibility of the runner and crew. Indoor flushing restrooms and porta potties will be available.
Age and conduct rules: runners must be at least 15 years old; runners under 18 require a legal guardian onsite as crew and an additional waiver at packet pickup. No pacers, no trekking poles, and no aid outside permitted times and areas. Littering or breaking the backyard rules can result in disqualification.
The event is capped at 150 runners. Awards include a custom belt buckle for the last person standing and acrylic awards for the last male and female.
