The Isles Ultramarathon
The Isles Ultramarathon is an eight-day, seven-night multi-day foot traverse of the inhabited Outer Hebrides. The route covers 185 miles (298 km) on foot, completing the 150-mile Hebridean Way and adding an approximately 35-mile extension to the Butt of Lewis. Upcoming scheduled dates listed are 17-24 September 2026, 16-23 September 2027 and 14-21 September 2028.
Terrain varies between maintained coastal trails and roads, faint or slippery low-hill tracks, peaty ground, causeways, boardwalks and bridges. There are more demanding off-road and hill sections in South Harris and an indistinct moorland section known as the Heritage Trail on Lewis. The prevailing wind direction is generally west-south-west.
The format includes seven nights in hotels, bunkhouses and hostels and most meals as standard; two evening meals and meals on ferries may be self-catered. Transfers between Tyndrum and the islands and ferry tickets are included. Support vehicles operate pit stops during the day and at dusk offering water, bars, sandwiches, fruit and some local foods; some dietary options are available but allergen contamination cannot be fully guaranteed.
Safety and logistics are provided by professional safety staff, medics and drivers, with operations audited to the BS8848 expedition safety standard. Participants must be over 18 and are expected to carry mandatory kit such as waterproofs, a headtorch and spare, an ultra-vest or small rucksack, hydration and basic first-aid and foot-care provisions.
