Format and navigation
More than 100 checkpoints are placed across approximately 8 square miles of rugged North Jersey wilderness. Checkpoints may be visited in any order. There are no traditional checkpoint flags; each checkpoint is marked by an orange ribbon with an ID number. Competitors must record proof of visiting checkpoints by writing the CP number on a passport, photographing the tag, or dictating the number for later transcription. Navigation is entirely on foot and GPS assistance is not allowed. All registrations are individual entries; information about team entries will be released later.
Mandatory gear and safety
Every participant must carry clothing appropriate for the day, a personal first-aid kit and whistle, a cell phone for emergencies, food and water sufficient for ten hours, and a compass plus the ability to use it.
Course and terrain
The course uses wild, scenic terrain that has not previously been used for foot, bike, or paddle events. The area includes rocky sections and notable views and vistas. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
