The Algonquin 50K

The Algonquin 50K is a community run, non-profit trail ultramarathon held at Milburn Landing in Pocomoke River State Park near Pocomoke City, MD. The course is listed as approximately 50 kilometers (about 31 miles) and may measure longer on trail GPS devices. About 95% of the route runs on trail, including single track and wider horse paths.

The terrain is mostly flat with sections of sandy trail and possible standing water depending on rainfall. The route is a modified out-and-back with a unique middle section on the return leg. Fully stocked aid stations are positioned roughly every 5 to 6 miles and offer water, Tailwind Nutrition, soda, boiled potatoes, salty snacks, and cake.

Safety and logistics include volunteers at road crossings, horses sweeping the course, and an enforced final cutoff of 8 hours. Key entry rules state no drop bags, no bib transfers, refunds, or deferrals, and no early or late starts. No dogs are allowed for runners and pacers are not permitted; friends or family may join runners from the end of the Algonquin Trail to the finish. Crew access is limited to designated aid stations. If a runner withdraws, they must turn in their bib to an ALQ crew member and proceed to an aid station for pickup.

All finishers receive a locally handmade ceramic mug and awards are given to the top three men and top three women. The event is organized and supported by volunteers in collaboration with Maryland Parks and Forest Services to support trail access on the Delmarva Peninsula.
