Tackle The Tar

Tackle the Tar - Rocky Mount, NC

Tackle the Tar is an annual obstacle course event hosted by the Rotary Club of Rocky Mount at the Rocky Mount Sports Complex. The 5K course runs through historic Battle Park and the E.B. Grain Company property, and includes a mud pit and more than 15 obstacles. All racers receive a T-shirt, medal, one free beer if over 21, and a goodie bag.

The event includes a separate 1 mile kids obstacle race for ages 8 to 13 with eight or more kid-focused obstacles and similar participant perks. Spectator access is free; spectators may pay for parking and vendor purchases. Packet pickup is available on the Friday and Saturday of race week.

Age and participation rules are stated for safety: participants must be at least 14 years old on race day to run the 5K; ages 14 to 15 must run with a parent or guardian and are excluded from competitive heats; ages 16 to 17 may run in fun run heats only with a parental consent form. Special discounts and group rates are offered for qualifying groups such as first responders and local college students.

All proceeds support college scholarships for local students; since 2016 the event has helped raise and award over $720,000. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
