Trail Running at Sunset Bay State Park

The Sunset Bay Trail Runs take place in Coos Bay, Oregon, offering several distances through scenic coastal landscapes. The event is hosted at Sunset Bay State Park, with the start and finish lines located at the gazebo on the south end of the bay. The courses lead participants through wooded areas and along flat cliff sections that offer views of the Pacific Ocean, sea lions, and offshore rock formations.

Participants can choose from four different distances:

  • 1 Mile Beach Fun Run
  • 4-Mile Trail Run
  • 15K Trail Run
  • 1/2 Marathon Trail Run

The courses involve hilly terrain. For safety reasons, the event prohibits the use of headphones, animals, bicycles, and jogging strollers. While the majority of the route stays on trails, some sections are open to vehicle traffic.

A single aid station serves the 15K and 13.1-mile courses, providing water, electrolytes, gels, and snacks. The 15K runners pass this station twice, while half-marathon participants pass it three times. A specific time requirement exists for the half-marathon; participants must reach the Cape Arago aid station at approximately 6.5 miles within a set timeframe. Those who do not meet this requirement are moved to the 15K event.

The event is RRCA sanctioned, and proceeds support a local high school cross country team. Restrooms are accessible at the four-mile mark for participants in the longer distances. Awards include ribbons for the top three overall finishers and winners in each age group. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
