Cleveland, United States • 28 Feb 2026
Event Overview
Sam's Last Stand is a fatass-style ultramarathon on the Lone Star Hiking Trail (LSHT) in Texas. The event will be held on February 28, 2026.
Race Course
The point-to-point race covers the entire 96-mile length of the Lone Star Hiking Trail. It starts at Trailhead 1 on the western terminus and finishes at Trailhead 15 near Cleveland, Texas. The trail is located in the Sam Houston National Forest and may only be explored on foot. The route passes through forested areas with pines and magnolias, creeks, and local wildlife.
The LSHT is primarily marked with 2” x 4” aluminum markers and wooden directional signs. Runners must follow these LSHT signs and not colored bands on markers, which denote connecting trails. The course includes road sections where participants must stay on the left side facing traffic.
Event Details
The event caps participation at 25 runners. The time limit to complete the 96-mile course is 36 hours. There is a small registration fee. The organizers will provide minimal water support along the course and allow drop bags. Each runner will receive an LSHT patch. Any leftover funds from the registration fee will be donated to the LSHT Club.
Rules and Safety
All runners must have the route loaded on a phone and show proof at bib pickup or the race start. Participants are advised to respect other hikers on the trail and be cautious of potential hazards. These include other trail users, partiers at trailheads in the evening, spiderwebs, poison ivy, hogs, coyotes, and aggressive farm dogs on road sections.
Some recommended safety gear includes a rain jacket or poncho, gloves, a beanie, and an extra 500 calories of food. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
