Run the River Ultra Challenge and Relay : Petal River Park, Petal MS

Run the River is a timed trail event held at Petal River Park that offers three participation options: individual ultra, relay teams, and a community walk. The main format is a six hour effort where individual runners complete as many 2.8-mile loops as possible and relay teams of two to four members rotate one runner on the course at a time, exchanging a baton in a designated exchange zone. Only laps completed before the cut-off count toward standings.

The loop mixes wide meadow lanes and single-track under a hardwood canopy. The route passes riverfront views, lagoons, wetlands, palmetto fields, and historic train trestles. The course includes natural trail features such as roots and uneven terrain; participants should bring hydration and gear suited to trail conditions.

The event uses a tailgate style for support and rest zones. There is no on-course aid station because of the short loop; cold refreshments are available at the finish and loop start. Teams are expected to stock their own fuel at personal tailgate sites. Timing is managed by a chip and baton system; individuals wear bibs and teams use a baton at the exchange. Final standings are based on completed laps with ties broken by total time.

The event is hosted by the City of Petal Parks & Recreation. Packet pick-up and other participant details are announced via the event Facebook page and by email. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
