Run the Red Desert

Run the Red Desert takes place Saturday, September 26, 2026 in the Northern Red Desert of Wyoming. The route begins at the Whitehorse Creek Overlook and finishes at the historic South Pass City.

The event offers two course distances:

• 30K
• 50K

Both courses are presented to expose participants to the landscape of the Northern Red Desert, including buttes, canyons, badlands, and open country. The race is dedicated to celebrating and conserving the Red Desert and was organized to raise awareness about pressures on this ecosystem.

Run the Red is scheduled on Wyoming Public Lands Day, the fourth Saturday in September, and is framed around public lands stewardship. A film titled Unfenced documents the race and its connection to conservation efforts in the Red Desert.

Logistical notes describe the Northern Red Desert as a wild, open space and note that the nearest gas stations are in Lander, about 35 miles north, and Farson, about 45 miles south. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
