Portobello Beach Race
The Portobello Beach Race takes place on 30 August 2026 and is licensed by Scottish Athletics. Race numbers are issued from the registration point at Powerleague Portobello, 10 Westbank Street, Edinburgh EH15 1DR.
The course is run on the sand at low tide and is approximately 4 miles long. The start is on the beach below Towerbank Primary School. Runners head east along the beach to a marker at the pumping station at the Joppa end, then return along the full length of the beach to a marker below the Cat and Dog Home and finish back at the start. The event is timed to coincide with low tide, but runners may need to climb over groynes or run around the seaward ends and could get their feet wet.
All proceeds from the race are donated to Towerbank Primary School and other local good causes chosen by club members.
Entry details include an online fee of £10.00, a limit of 350 entries, and an age restriction of 16 and over on race day. Online entry closing date is 28 August 2025. Entries may be available on the day unless the entry limit has been reached. Race numbers are non transferable and not refundable. No one may compete without a race number.
Prizes are awarded in Open Male and Open Female categories for first to third places and for First Vet 40 up to 50, First SuperVet 50 up to 60 and First Hypervet 60 and over for both sexes. A kids fun run also takes place on race day.
Limited car parking is available at the public car park in Bridge Street and on various side streets in Portobello. The promenade is served by multiple Lothian buses and Brunstane train station is a 20 to 25 minute walk from the promenade. Toilets are available at Powerleague Portobello and about 200 m west along the promenade. A safe bag drop will be provided and water, snacks and a cake stand are available at the finish.
