Portobello Beach Race 30 August 2026

The Portobello Beach Race is licensed by Scottish Athletics and takes place on 30 August 2026. Registration and race number issue are held at Powerleage Portobello, 10 Westbank Street, Edinburgh EH15 1DR. Race numbers are non-transferable and non-refundable and no one will be allowed to compete without a race number.

The course is run on the sand at low tide and is approximately 4 miles in length. The start is on the beach immediately below Towerbank Primary School. Competitors run east to a marker at the pumping station at the Joppa end, then return along the full length of the beach to a marker below the Cat and Dog Home before finishing back at the start. The event is timed to coincide with low tide but participants may need to climb over groynes or run around the seaward end and could get their feet wet.

Online entry fee is £10 and the race is limited to 350 entries. Entry is restricted to athletes aged 16 and over on race day.

Prizes are awarded in open male and female categories and in several age based veteran categories. A Kids Fun Run will take place on race day; further details are available from the organiser.

Limited car parking is available at the public car park in Bridge Street and on side streets. Portobello is served by Lothian buses 12, 15, 19, 21, 26, 44, 45, 49 and EastCoast124. Brunstane train station is a 20 to 25 minute walk from the promenade. Toilets are available at Powerleage Portobello and about 200 m west along the promenade. A safe bag drop will be provided and water, snacks and a cake stand will be available at the finish. The promenade has a number of cafes and restaurants.
