Event Details
The Popple Shoot Trail Races take place on Saturday, May 9, 2026. The event is organized by Big Slo Running and net proceeds are donated to local charities. The races start and finish at the Wild River Campground, located at 802 Railroad St in Minong, Wisconsin. The event is officially a "Trail Sisters" approved race.
Distances
Participants can choose from four distances:
- 87K (ultramarathon)
- 62K (ultramarathon)
- 25K
- 10K
Course
The courses use a variety of surfaces, including the flat public Wild Rivers Trail (a crushed gravel ATV trail on an old railroad bed), single-lane dirt ATV trails, and paved or dirt/gravel county roads. The total elevation gain and loss across the courses is minor. The 87K and 62K distances have a 15-hour finish cutoff. The 87K course has an additional cutoff at mile 42.3 (12 hours). Each distance has a specific breakdown of trail and road surfaces.
Aid Stations
Aid stations are provided along the courses and are stocked with items like sandwiches, cookies, fruit, electrolyte drinks, water, and soda. The number of fully stocked and water-only stations varies by distance. Distances between aid stations range from 2.5 to 7.8 miles.
Registration and Logistics
Online registration closes at 11:59 PM CT on Sunday, May 3, 2026. Packet pickup is available on Friday, May 8, and on race morning at specified times for each distance. Registration fees increase over three periods: Early Bird (Nov 28 - Dec 31), Standard (Jan 1 - Mar 31), and Late (Apr 1 - May 5). No refunds are offered. Awards are given to the top male and female runners in each distance, with overall and age category awards.

Minong, Wisconsin is approximately 90 minutes north of Eau Claire, 4 hours north of Madison, and 60 minutes south of Superior/Duluth.
