The Path of the Flood Historic Races
The Path of the Flood Historic Races takes place on May 23, 2026 and marks the event's 12th running. The event is hosted by Heritage Johnstown in partnership with the Cambria County Conservation & Recreation Authority. Proceeds benefit Cambria County trails and local heritage programs, including the CCCRA Friends of the Trails program. The races are part of the 2026 Cambria County Trails Series.
Distances offered:
- 14 Miler
- 8 Miler
- 5K
The 14 Miler begins within the ruins of the South Fork Dam and follows the South Fork Little Conemaugh River for the first two miles. Both the 14 Miler and the 8 Miler include a passage through the luminary lit Staple Bend Tunnel, noted as the first railroad tunnel in the United States. Course sections use a hybrid of road and rail trail surfaces and pass through the Coy-McCombie Link trail, Franklin Boro, East Conemaugh, the Trolley Line Extension to Woodvale Heights, Plum Street and the Hope Tunnel. The course returns to the road for a finish at Peoples Natural Gas Park, with views of the historic Stone Bridge.
All three distances use chip timing with timing mats. Registration fees vary by distance and date; youth 17 years and under may register free for all races through a sponsoring foundation. No refunds are issued; registration fees for nonattending registrants are applied as donations to the race beneficiaries. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
