Paluma Ultra
The Paluma Ultra is a 52 km ultramarathon trail run through the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics region of Paluma Range National Park. The course uses almost entirely unsealed surfaces with about 492 metres of bitumen and the remainder on single trail, dirt road and old logging tracks.
The route moves through distinct landscape zones: wet tropical rainforest with waterfalls and creek crossings, dry eucalypt forest and open cattle country, then returns into dense rainforest around the Paluma township. The course description is divided into eight sections that include technical single trail, wider 4WD track sections and several climbs and descents, with historical features from past tin mining and logging activity present along the trails.
There are two aid stations located approximately at the 20 km and 38 km marks. Aid stations are manned by volunteers and provide first aid, hydration, fruit and light snacks. Bag drop service is available at those aid stations and at the finish; runners must label bags and drop them at Race HQ by the stated time.
Runners are required to carry mandatory equipment such as a hydration vest, adequate water and nutrition, two compression bandages, an emergency blanket, a whistle, a headlight, a charged mobile phone and a paper map. Race inclusions noted for entrants include race number with timing chip, medical support, post race refreshments and a finisher certificate. The event starts and finishes in the township of Paluma.
