Paluma Ultra
The Paluma Ultra is a 52 km ultramarathon trail run through the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics region of Paluma Range National Park. The point-to-point course starts and finishes in the township of Paluma and follows a mix of single trail, dirt roads and old logging tracks with only a small section of sealed road.
The route passes through wet tropical rainforest, past waterfalls and creek crossings, then into dry eucalypt forest and open country before returning to dense rainforest. The organiser describes the course in eight sections, which include rainforest single trail, historic tin mining tracks, a high point at Mt Spec, 4WD track running on Benham’s Track and a final local loop through Paluma village.
There are two staffed aid stations and bag drop locations approximately at the 20 km and 38 km marks. Aid stations provide first aid, hydration, fruit, lollies, small snack items and basic hot and cold drinks. Cut off points are enforced on the course and a final finish cut off applies.
Entry details note a minimum age of 18 years and published entry fees. Mandatory equipment is required and includes hydration, adequate food, basic first aid items, whistle, headlight, a charged mobile phone with the course GPX downloaded and paper maps. Additional services such as shared accommodation, meals and bus transfers are offered as extras. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
