Paluma Ultra - Outer Limits

The Paluma Ultra is a 52 km ultramarathon trail run through the World Heritage listed Wet Tropics region of Paluma Range National Park in Queensland. The course travels from the Paluma township into wet tropical rainforest, past waterfalls and creek crossings, then down into dry eucalypt country and cattle country before climbing back into rainforest around Paluma.

Most of the route is off-road; only 492 metres are on sealed surface. The track network used includes single trail, dirt roads and former logging trails, with a history of tin mining and timber harvesting visible in places. The organisers note a long network of mapped trails in the area and a course that can be described in eight sequential sections including village trails, deep rainforest, historic mining trails, a climb to the higher parts of Mt Spec, 4WD track, dry tall timber country, a rainforest descent and a final village loop.

There are two staffed aid stations and corresponding bag-drop locations roughly at the 20 km and 38 km marks; both offer first aid, water and electrolyte drinks, fresh fruit, small snacks and basic comforts. Runners must be self-sufficient and carry mandatory equipment such as a hydration vest, adequate water and nutrition, basic first-aid items, whistle, headlight, mobile phone with the course GPX downloaded and paper maps. Minimum age is 18 years on race day. Entry fees are listed for general and late entry. GPX files and course maps are available on Plotaroute.
