MTC Kelpie

Event overview

The MTC KELPIE is a single-day ultra running race held on 4 June 2028. The course covers 38 miles from Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath (KW6 6EJ) to John O'Groats (KW1 4YR). It is Day 9 of the MTC SCOTIA nine-day end-to-end series and forms part of the Mount to Coast End to End Challenge. Reported ascent is 1,753 ft and descent 1,929 ft. All finishers receive a bespoke KELPIE medal; male and female champions receive trophies.

Entry, cut-offs and field size

Entry is limited to 20 regular competitors with an additional allowance of 20 SCOTIA competitors for a maximum of 40 starters. The standard entry fee is £90.00; a Plus Race Package costing £155.00 includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi-viz jacket if ordered at least four weeks before the event. Deposits and payments are non-refundable. A defer option is available for a fee of £15 up to four weeks before the event. Competitors may add personal cancellation insurance at checkout.

The race applies preset cut-off times based on a minimum average speed of 4 mph. Competitors who fall below this minimum may be withdrawn.

Navigation, tracking and mandatory kit

Maps and GPX files are emailed to entrants four weeks before the event. URL provides each competitor with a tracking device with an SOS function; live tracking is available during the race. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, basic first aid, emergency food and a waterproof map case.
