MTC KELPIE - Ultra running event
The MTC KELPIE is a single day ultra race of 38 miles, scheduled for 4 June 2028. It is Day 9 and the final stage of the nine day Mount to Coast SCOTIA end to end challenge. The event is described as the first edition.
The route runs from Inver Caravan Park, Dunbeath, and finishes at John O'Groats. Total ascent is 1,753 ft and total descent is 1,929 ft. Route maps and GPX files are provided only to entrants, and mapping information is emailed to competitors four weeks before the event. Organisers supply each competitor with a tracking device that supports real time tracking and has an SOS function.
Field size is limited to 20 dedicated MTC KELPIE entries plus an additional allowance of 20 SCOTIA competitors, giving a maximum of 40 starters. Entrants must be at least 20 years old. Entry fees are listed as £90 for the standard entry and £155 for the plus race package, which includes an embroidered race shirt and a lightweight hi‑viz race jacket if ordered at least four weeks before the event. All payments are non refundable; personal cancellation insurance and a defer option for £15 are available at booking.
Cut off times on the course are based on a minimum average speed of 4 mph; competitors who fall below this threshold will be warned and may be withdrawn. The race is cup free so competitors should provide their own reusable cup. Mandatory kit includes a backpack, head torch with spare batteries, provided route maps, compass or GPS device, whistle, mobile phone, a basic first aid kit and an emergency food pack.
