Event format

The Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard is a "Last Person Standing" uphill race in Brownsville, VT. Participants complete repeated laps; each hour runners ascend and descend approximately 1,209 ft of vertical gain via one of two routes. The event continues until only one participant remains. Runners have one hour to complete each lap and must be at the start line on the hour to continue. Each lap is about 2.25 miles. Each hour participants may choose three laps on the t-bar path (about 403 ft per lap) or one lap to a higher point on the hiking trail (about 1,209 ft).

Course, facilities and rules

The event is based at Ascutney Outdoors Center, 449 Ski Tow Rd, Brownsville, VT. There will be one aid station at the bottom with hot food, and indoor tables and bathrooms are available. Camping the night before is permitted and personal aid stations such as EZ-ups and tables are allowed. Small prizes are planned for runners who reach specified accumulated elevation gains. Awards include Assist (2nd place) and Winner (Last Person Standing). Five percent of entry fees will be donated to Ascutney Outdoors and five percent to Ascutney Trails Association. Full refunds are offered through November 1 and 50% refunds through November 10. The course may be cold at night in late November and snow is possible.
