Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard

Mount Ascutney Vertical Backyard is a Last Person Standing style mountain event held in Brownsville, VT at 449 Ski Tow Rd. The format requires runners to complete repeated laps on the hour; the event continues until only one participant remains. Each hourly cycle includes significant elevation gain, and participants must be at the start line on the hour to continue.

Participants may choose between route options each hour. One option reaches a higher turnaround with about 1,209 feet of ascent for that hour. The alternative uses the t-bar path with roughly 403 feet of ascent per repeat; doing three repeats equals the higher turnaround's ascent. The course is mostly visible from the bottom, which creates spectator viewing opportunities.

Event logistics include one aid station at the bottom offering hot food, and indoor tables and bathrooms at the Ascutney Outdoors Center. There are spots for camping the night before and personal aid stations such as EZ-ups and tables are permitted. The event provides small prizes for reaching set cumulative elevation milestones and awards including Cash Lap, Vert Gobbler, Assist, and Winner for the final remaining runner.

The entry fee is $150 not including taxes. Refunds are available at 75% through October 1 and 50% through November 1. Five percent of entry fees are donated to each of three local organizations: Ascutney Outdoors, Ascutney Trails Association, and West Windsor Fast Squad.

Note that this is a late November mountain event; conditions can include cold nights, snow, and ice. Visit the organization's website for the most recent information.
