Course and logistics
Courses use mostly singletrack trail, dirt roads and the Valley Drive. The half marathon begins on the Sentinel Mesa Trail, links to the Wildcat Trail, then follows Valley Drive to the 3 Sisters aid station at about mile 9.95 and returns to finish at just under 13.5 miles. The 50K follows the same early loop, visits Three Sisters at mile 9.95, includes an 11-mile out-and-back to Mitchell Mesa (back to Three Sisters at mile 20.95), a 7.80-mile backcountry segment, a final visit to Three Sisters at mile 28.75, then about 3.5 miles to the finish.
Aid stations are well stocked with fluids, gels, snacks and a variety of food. Wildcat Trail A.S. sits at mile 4.5; Mitchell Mesa has a light aid station near mile 13.5 and 17.5; Three Sisters is a major aid and medical station. Drop bags are allowed at Three Sisters and will be returned to the finish. This is a cup-less event, so runners must carry a bottle or hydration pack. There are two time-limit cut-offs at Three Sisters - at mile 20.95 (6-hour limit) and at mile 28.75 (9-hour limit). Medical support, on-course first responders and local live music will be present. Average March temperatures given are a high of 60 and a low of 37. Lodging options include The Monument Valley View Hotel, Gouldings Lodge and nearby campgrounds.
